Calling Mr. Chuck Beattie, Calling "Dr. Blues"

How do I write about a man who has been so instrumental to my personal development in regards to
loving, singing and performing the Blues: I Just start!

Around May, 2002 I arrived in Asheville, North Carolina. It was here that I was asked by one of my old band mate's Chad Hildebran to join him at an open mic night in Weaverville; It was this night that I met  a most wonderful and  kindred spirit, Mr. Chuck Beattie. He called me out of my shell and onto the stage and a long lasting friendship was born.

Shortly after our encounter and becoming fast friends " Dr. Blues" was invited to perform at England's "Bury Blues Festival" 2003. The experience was altogether "emotional and humbling" this highlight in his career took him back to another fulfilling and emotional time, the relationship with his brother Gerald. At a young age Chuck and Gerald where taught the rudiments of drumming and by their early teens they had formed a band: The Vagabonds. At around fifteen " Dr. Blues" embarked on another wonderful adventure in the Arts & Music "Radio."  On a school field trip Chuck met "Mr. Charles O. Johnson," and was told by him "Come back and I'll give you a job" and this he did. Chuck was an assistant to Mr. Johnson spending hours pulling records and doing other tasks that would bring him to love music even more.

And in the hours he spent pouring over liner notes and absorbing everything he could about these wonderful pioneer's of sound and soul, Chucks love for being a musician was brought to full realization, he was on his way, on his way to becoming one of the greatest "Keepers of the Blues" alive today.

Mr. Johnson opened GoldLeaf Records; he was known as the Godfather of the "North Carolina Soul Sound,"  he invited Chuck to form a band and play back up for some of GoldLeaf's artists, to name a few: Otis Clay, Gene Chandler, The Kelly Brothers and many more...

Dr. Blues decided to take the adventure of getting a higher education this brought him to one of life's most mysterious and wonderful blessing's getting married. Chucks sophomore year proved heart breaking, he learned his brother Gerald had died in an accident; his heart and music grew dormant for quite some time after this. Years later while getting his PhD. in Tallahassee, at Florida State University Mr. Beattie was invited to join in and play with the Gospel group "The Sensational Harmonaires" and God brought back his heart and his music. Around this time Chuck learned  how to play guitar, this came in handy when he auditioned for the "North Carolina Jazz Ensemble." Like Dr. Blues is known to do he jumped in with both feet and no fear and played a (just learned) guitar with grace and skill.

Chuck Beattie is a man of many well earned and well worn hat's, he is a" Professor," a "Consultant"; both private and public, he has flown Airplanes, he is a wonderful "Portrait Artist," and his current calling has brought him into the fold of "God" as a "Minister;" all of this and he is still an accomplished "Blues Man!"

By the time Chuck and I met he was moving toward his current status with wisdom and heartfelt love, whenever we took stage together Chuck and I would "Sing-Joke-Call and Response," like to friends who had been working at it for years. " Yes I am a old soul," but if I mine is old and wise Chuck's is older, wiser, and full of joy and light.

It will be my pleasure to interview Dr. Blues; it would be my honor to share the same vocal space again with someone who so much reminds me of one of my musical mentors "BB King." And if anyone could teach us all  as much about love, loss, freedom and redemption as Mr. King, it would be Chuck Beattie " Dr. Blues."

Mr. Beattie's influences are: Taj Mahal, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Son House, and Albert King just to name a few... If you would like to hear Mr. Beattie, go to http://www.reverbnation.com/chuckbeattieband
